Over the weekend, I hosted a wine-tasting at my home. The theme was for everyone to bring their favourite bottle of wine, whether white, red or rose, and introduce them to the rest of the group. Someone brought along this bottle.
I've only recently heard about Weingut Von Winning from another sommelier friend of mine, so it was a pleasant surprise to have one of their wines brought right to my doorstep! Or do we call that serendipity?
Anyway, this wine was memorable for so many reasons. One is its name - Win Win Riesling. I mean, who forgets a name like that? Weingut (which basically means Vineyard in German and NOT 'good wine', which is its direct translation) Von Winning is also part of the VDP, which stands for the Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter. It is an organisation where most of Germany's top wine producers are members, and basically denotes a certain level of quality in their wines. (I'll write more about this another day).
Win Win Riesling is fermented and aged in both oak and stainless steel. Made of 100% Riesling grapes, the result is a juicy, slightly salty wine with plenty of elegance, freshness and beautiful peach and citrus flavours. I enjoyed it so much that now a visit to their winery in the Pfalz/Palatinate is definitely on my to-do list!
